ERTRAC Conference “European Road Transport and Climate Change”
26 September 2007
Bringing together all the major stakeholders in road transport, the ERTRAC conference held on 26 September in Brussels addressed the issue of climate change and explored contributions from the road transport sector.
Representing the European Commission, Fotis Karmitsos (DG TREN), András Siegler (DG RTD) and Rosalie Zobel (DG INFSO) addressed challenges faced in Europe, highlighting among others energy sources and infrastructure.
Responding to these issues, ERTRAC Chairman Rudi Kunze and other stakeholders represented in ERTRAC explored research and technology development activities of the automotive industry, road engineering researchers and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) providers in reducing dependency on fossil fuels and improving the efficiency of the overall road transport system. Further EC perspectives were then provided by representatives of DG Enterprise and Industry, and DG Environment.
In the afternoon, representatives from national authorities in Austria, Greece and Sweden described policies and programs tailored to road transport issues which have priority in their respective countries.
The following panel discussion among representatives of a number of the leading European associations of stakeholders in road transport explored a variety of issues, including urban mobility, goods transportation, consumer behaviour, ITS, fuel alternatives and renewable energy.
In conclusion, the general opinion was that a systematic approach to road transport issues must guide the European research priorities to adequately address the issue of climate change.
