ERTRAC releases two new deep Dives on circularity and industrial transformation

ERTRAC has published two new Deep Dives addressing key dimensions of the future of Europe’s automotive and mobility ecosystem: “ELV Recycling in the EU” and “The Fifth Industrial Revolution.”
Together, these publications underscore the significant transition facing the automotive sector.

The Fifth Industrial Revolution” examines how advanced digital technologies, circularity, and sustainability must converge to build a more resilient and competitive European industry. It identifies key strategies for reducing the carbon footprint of automotive materials, including closed- and open-loop recycling, green primary materials, and targeted carbon removal, while also highlighting remaining structural barriers.

ELV Recycling in the EU” focuses on the transformation of the End-of-Life Vehicle system. It presents a future model driven by increased automation, digitalisation, and traceability, featuring advanced dismantling, sorting, and recycling processes to recover high-quality secondary materials and enable closed-loop value chains. The Deep Dive also emphasises the need to align the perspectives of automotive, recycling, and transport infrastructure sectors as new circular systems develop.

Both documents support broader discussions on strengthening Europe’s industrial sovereignty, reducing reliance on virgin raw materials, and accelerating the shift to a more circular and climate-neutral economy.

We encourage stakeholders from across industry, research and policy to explore these two new publications and their perspectives on the future of the automotive sector.
