ERTRAC publishes its new roadmap on Long Distance Freight Transport
ERTRAC has released the new version of its roadmap on Long Distance Freight Transport, in collaboration with and supported by the platform on logistics ALICE. The document lists the research and innovation needs to help Europe move towards a more sustainable, connected, automated, and resilient freight transport system.
The roadmap follows the system approach to road freight transport to deliver efficiency and sustainability. It focuses on cutting energy and materials use, improving road safety and integration with infrastructure, and making logistics processes overall more resilient.
The document points out that cost is a key issue for adopting zero-emission freight. For new solutions to be accepted, they need to be sustainable and innovative, but also affordable and practical for the operators. The roadmap, therefore, stresses the importance of looking at business models and incentives in the next FP10 European research and innovation programme.
The roadmap considers the entire ecosystem, including energy production, storage, distribution, and the customer’s perspective, beyond just vehicles and logistics operations, to provide a strategic perspective to help make European freight transport more competitive and sustainable.
Supporting the transformation of freight transport will require systemic thinking, coordination among stakeholders, and a stronger link between innovation and deployment and market conditions.
