About STREnGth_M
STREnGth_M is an innovative road transport project supporting the objectives of the European Green Deal and the Paris Agreement. Running from February 2023 through January 2026, it brings together a dynamic consortium of 23 partners from 10 Member States and beyond. The project is led by AVL, one of the world’s leading mobility technology companies in development, simulation, and testing for the automotive industry and other sectors, and serves as ERTRAC’s Coordinated Support Action (CSA).
The project aims to specify future research needs in road transport, update and coordinate strategic research agendas and roadmaps, and facilitate continuous exchange between Horizon Europe partnerships and platforms related to road transport research. It also seeks to identify barriers to the deployment of research results at European and international levels, monitor global progress in electric mobility, and assess the feasibility of innovative solutions for emerging markets in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Additionally, STREnGth_M works to strengthen existing links and establish new connections between European, national, and regional programmes, as well as supporting structures for international cooperation task forces.
About the webinars
The first instalment of the STREnGth_M webinar series, “Future in Motion: Strengthening Road Transport Research”, took place on 3 September 2025. Organised by POLIS, this online event provided a detailed overview of how ERTRAC and STREnGth_M are driving research and innovation in road transport to support Europe’s transition to sustainable mobility.
This first webinar highlighted major initiatives, including the New Road Transport Vision 2050 and the updated ERTRAC Urban Mobility Roadmap, while offering valuable insights into the emerging research and innovation needs that are shaping the future of urban mobility across Europe. It was moderated by Karen Vancluysen (POLIS), and counted with presentations from Verena Wagenhofer (Project Coordinator, AVL/AT), Andrew Winder (ERTICO), Xavier Aertsens (ERTRAC), Peter Urban (IKA, Aachen University), Ivo Cré (POLIS), and Franziska Schmidt (UGE).
The second webinar, “Transport Innovation: Needs, Priorities and Opportunities in Asia, Africa and Latin America”, took place on 18 September 2025. Co-hosted by UN-Habitat and UEMI, the session provided an excellent opportunity to explore transport innovation needs, regional priorities, and emerging opportunities across these three regions. It brought together experts and practitioners to discuss practical strategies for advancing low-carbon, inclusive mobility through innovation.
Topics included pressing transport challenges in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, innovative mobility solutions and best practices already in place, regional priorities and enabling conditions for urban transport innovation, as well as opportunities for cross-regional learning and collaboration. Presentations and input from Oliver Lah (UEMI), Daniel Munene (UN-Habitat), Mercy Edna Manyasa (UN-Habitat), Mark Zudgeest (University of Cape Town), Shobhakar Dhakal (Asian Institute of Technology), and Jose Ignacio Huertas Gadrozo (Tecnológico de Monterrey) were featured.
The third webinar, “Advancing Sustainable Road Transport Through Future-Oriented Education & Training Programs”, was hosted by Rupprecht Consult and took place on 23 September 2025. This session brought together academic and research institutions, as well as stakeholders from across Europe and beyond, who are involved in education and capacity-building for road transport and sustainable mobility. The webinar aimed to connect STREnGth_M with the academic and research community, sharing key findings and innovations with students, professors, and researchers.
Through case studies and practical insights, it supported knowledge transfer, enhanced teaching and research, and inspired the next generation of mobility professionals. It was moderated by Hassan Hussin (Rupprecht Consult) and included the participation of Dr. phil. Sabrina Grübener (RWTH Aachen University), Dr. Ing. Massimo Morgalio (Technische Universität Berlin), and Farida Moawad & Ghada Abdul Aziz (Transport for Cairo).
